The term “school refusers” isn’t helpful as It implies it’s wrong for a child to not go to school as classroom attendance is more important. It is easy to think a child refuses to go to school because they want to get away from learning. However, many things could cause a child to feel anxious or fear when attending school. It was identified in the 1930s to label children who chose not to attend school but it’s important to understand why.
School is one big social environment that not every child has the right tools to navigate. Bullying or teasing, problems with the teacher, overwhelming exams, and peer conflict affect a lot of children in school. These can be different depending on the child however, it is helpful to understand why your child does not feel safe in school.
As a parent, you must allow yourself to see things from your child’s perspective. What you may perceive as simply acting out or unreasonable tantrums, a child may feel unsupportive, which is why it is crucial to take the right approach to school refusal.
